Charging your battery for the first time: NiCd and NiMH batteries should be charged for 15 hours initially, and Li-Ion batteries should be charged for 5-6 hours. Thereafter, charge according to the user manual. Remember that a new battery or a battery that has not been used recently should be fully charged and discharged a full 2-3 cycles before the battery can achieve its full potential.
The three types of cellular batteries you will find on the market are Lithium Ion (Li-Ion), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), and Nickel Cadmium (NiCd)
Lithium Ion batteries have a higher capacity and are lighter in weight. Lithium Ion batteries are the most recommended and usually the preferred battery. These batteries are more costly than NiCd and NiMH, because of their superior performance. Characteristics of Lithium Ion batteries include:

Nickel Metal Hydride batteries provide at least thirty percent more talk time than NiCd batteries. They take approximately 20% longer to charge but they have virtually no memory effect, so they do not need to be discharged Nickel Metal Hydride batteries can be damaged by excessive heat by overcharging. To avoid this, simply use the manufacturers original charger or one of our excellent charges. All of the chargers we sell will automatically shut off when the battery is fully charged to avoid damaging your battery or phone. Characteristics of Nickel Metal Hydride batteries include:

Nickel Cadmium batteries are slowly being phased out by the rapid growth of Nickel Metal Hydride and Lithium Ion batteries. However, they are strong and their prices are inexpensive. The one problem with NiCd batteries is that they develop a "memory effect" and should be fully discharged before recharging to provide the maximum operating time. A memory effect occurs when recharging a battery before it is fully discharged which causes the battery to "remember" its previous partial charge level and not charge to full capacity.
